Fisheries plant management system for traceability development

This project was developed and implemented in collaboration with a fisheries manufacturing plant located in Makassar, Indonesia, and a supporting environmental nonprofit organization. The team built a special customized system as a fisheries traceability system to become a fishery information and traceability system solution for export needs.

Traceability is the ability to access any or all information about a product throughout its life cycle by using a system of recorded identifications. Traceability also relates to the ability to track and trace along the supply chain.While tracking allows the supply-chain stakeholders to follow the downstream path of a product, tracing enables identification of the origins and characteristics of the product when following an upstream path in the supply chain. Traceability is vital for food safety, to prove legality and to verify sustainability. With seafood the most globally traded food commodity, all three aspects are vital, yet there are no international standards related to documentation and record keeping nor to tracking protocols.

Features and advantages of this developed system are:

  • Traceability system is facilitated and supported by the process of generating transaction documents easily, gradually, and recorded in detail;

  • Developed with RFID technology;

  • Decision support system generated by the output of the system used in management decision;

  • Having an embedded internal control to minimize the possibility of fraud, intentional or unintentional;

  • Each users has access rights according to their respective responsibilities;

  • With the concept of Enterprise Resource Management (ERP), the transaction on each module are synchronized with another module; and

  • Integrated Centralized Database supports the well-running of ERP system and prevents invalid or crash data retrieval in document creation and presentation of reports.
